The location is a block of flats where the audience can hear the noise from traffic and sirens suggesting the idea of crime in the movie, it also adds to the atmosphere of the busy environment. There is diegetic noise in the opening through the use of rain which gives the impression of a negative theme in the storyline, this music also immediately makes the look of the screen appear dark and dull likewise to the storyline. Later, when the camera resumes back to the characters flat there is the continious noise of a clock ticking, which gives the impression of importance of time which could relate to the storyline. As the camera flicked between shots of the character and the clock the camera gets closer and closer to the clock, meaning the clock ticking gets louder. This adds tension to the screen and builds suspense for the audience.

In some scenes it creates a dull atmosphere like when the dead body is in the shot, the lighting at this part reinforces the atmosphere and feelings the audience are suppose to feel. When the characters are walking down the street, there are bulbs hanging down on string.

Camerawork
When the audience are introduced to one of main characters, there is a close-up of the table where the character's belonging are, which indicates the type of character Morgan Freeman is as it enables the audience to see that he is a detective. There is a low angle tracking shot when both main characters are walking. This shows the equality between the characters being strong, powerful and authoritative. There is a long shot of the main character lying in bed which shows the surroundings to the audience, it then zooms in and jump cuts the metronome and then goes back and forth getting closer to the clock and the character showing the connection between the character and the object, to add suspense and tension.
