Analysis of The Joker - 'The Dark Knight'

Appearance, personality and character role:

The role of the Joker is very dissimilar to the conventions of an ordinary 'baddy' of a movie. His appearance is hugely significant for his character role - visually, his make-up is thin and messily applied to his face which gives a vivid impression of a clown-like figure who looks as though he is taken as a joke to the other characters. He has a large scar on his face which extends his smile to enhance it, this causes the facial expression of the joker to appear constantly smiley, which means he is sends mixed signals adding uncertainity to the audiences mind. Alongside this, he wears purple suit, a green tie and green dyed hair which signifies his role through the his unusual and striking appearance. In comparison to the common conventions of a thriller character, The Joker is very dissimilar as he does not meet the criteria for a normal thriller villain due to his characteristics and appearance.

However, it could be argued that the Joker can be compared to character's such as Darth Vader because of the similarity between their sense of dread they bring to the screen and obscure presense. Likewise to the conventions of a thriller, Batman and the Joker are binary opposites in the film. The character of the joker is usually regarded as a "psychopathic, mass murdering, scizophrenic clown with zero empathy", this is a very striking way to describe a character as it isn't something in which can be related to other characters. This phrase emphasises his disregard and denial which makes him truly terrifying.

His unpredictable actions and dialogue reveals his character's personality, displaying his lack of self-awareness, cruelness and villainous actions. As a result, his characters role serves the purpose of providing an ironic twist to the storyline intended to make others question themselves.
